The good news? Learning how to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall doesn’t mean putting everything away and starting over. In fact, some of my favorite early-fall outfits begin with pieces I’ve been wearing all summer. It’s really about changing the layers, textures, colors, shoes, and accessories around them.

If you’re ready for fall fashion but the weather hasn’t gotten the memo yet, here are nine of my favorite ways to make the transition.

1. Keep Your Summer Dresses and Change the Layers

One of the easiest pieces to carry into fall is a great dress.

That sleeveless midi or maxi you wore with sandals all summer can suddenly feel completely different with a lightweight blazer, cropped jacket, or cardigan.

Trade the summery accessories for a structured handbag and a loafer, ballet flat, or bootie, and you have an outfit that feels appropriate for September without dressing for temperatures that haven’t arrived yet.

I especially love doing this with black, cream, chocolate, burgundy, olive, or a beautiful print.

2. Start Introducing Fall Colors

You don’t need heavy sweaters to make an outfit feel like fall.

Sometimes color alone changes the entire mood.

This is when I start reaching for chocolate brown, camel, deep olive, burgundy, navy, black, and rich cream. I’ll mix those shades with lighter pieces already in my closet.

It gives you that beautiful fall feeling while still being practical for warmer days.

3. Bring Back the Blazer

If there is one piece I rely on during transitional weather, it’s a blazer.

I love throwing one over a tank, fitted tee, bodysuit, or even a dress. You can wear it in the morning, take it off when the temperature climbs, and put it back on for dinner.

And a blazer instantly makes an outfit look more intentional.

This is also the perfect time to bring out beautiful tweeds, plaids, herringbone, suede-inspired textures, and richer neutral tones.

4. Transition Your Shoes from Summer to Fall

This may be the easiest trick of all.

You can wear almost the exact same outfit you wore in July and make it look like September simply by changing your shoes.

Start trading your most summery sandals for:

• Loafers
• Ballet flats
• Slingbacks
• Sneakers
• Mules
• Ankle boots
• Tall boots with dresses once the weather cools

I love this approach because you can acknowledge the season without overheating.

5. Add Fall Texture Before You Add Weight

Fall fashion is as much about texture as temperature.

Instead of immediately reaching for chunky sweaters and heavy coats, start introducing materials that look like fall but still work in transitional weather.

Think suede, leather, lightweight cashmere, denim, tweed, satin, and beautiful knits.

Even something as simple as carrying a suede handbag with a lightweight dress can completely change the feel of your outfit.

6. Keep Wearing White After Labor Day

The old rule about not wearing white after Labor Day has never made much sense to me.

White jeans, ivory trousers, cream dresses, and crisp white shirts can be gorgeous in fall. The trick is pairing them with richer colors and textures.

White denim with a camel blazer and loafer? Gorgeous.

Cream trousers with a chocolate sweater? Even better.

To me, an elevated fall wardrobe isn’t necessarily dark. It’s richer and more layered.

7. Transition Your Accessories for Fall

Before buying an entirely new wardrobe, take a look at your accessories.

This is when I start changing out some of my brighter summer handbags for structured bags in black, chocolate, burgundy, cognac, or deeper neutrals.

A beautiful belt, statement sunglasses, gold jewelry, a silk scarf, or a gorgeous handbag can make even the simplest outfit feel new.

And if you know me, you know I believe the handbag can absolutely make the outfit.

8. Mix High and Low for an Elevated Fall Look

Transitional dressing is also a great time to mix high and low because you don’t need to replace everything in your closet for a new season.

One of my favorite things about fashion is that an amazing outfit doesn’t have to come from one designer or one price point.

I’ll happily pair a great Zara find with a designer handbag, an Alice + Olivia jacket with denim, or a classic wardrobe basic with a fabulous pair of shoes.

The secret is less about the label and more about fit, proportion, styling, and confidence.

Invest in the pieces you’ll wear for years and have fun with the trends.

9. Don’t Rush the Fall Season

This might be my biggest rule.

You don’t have to wear boots, a sweater, and a wool coat just because pumpkin spice is back.

Dress for the weather, but style for the season.

That means adding fall elements little by little. A richer color here. A suede bag there. A blazer over your shoulders. A loafer instead of a sandal.

Eventually, those lighter pieces naturally give way to sweaters, coats, and boots.

My Easy Summer-to-Fall Wardrobe Formula

When I’m standing in my closet wondering what to wear during that in-between season, I keep it simple:

One summer piece + one fall layer + one fall accessory.

• A sleeveless dress + blazer + structured handbag.
• White jeans + lightweight knit + loafers.
• Denim + tank + tweed jacket.
• Midi skirt + fitted tee + suede bag.

It’s effortless, polished, and most importantly, wearable.

You don’t have to wait for a certain date. I usually start introducing fall colors, shoes, accessories, and lightweight layers in late August and September, then add heavier pieces as the weather changes.

Can you still wear summer dresses in the fall?

Absolutely. Add a blazer, cardigan, jacket, loafer, or boot and switch to richer accessories and colors. Many summer dresses can work beautifully well into fall.

Can you wear white after Labor Day?

Of course, Milan also offered endless fashion inspiration. From elegant tailoring to effortless street style, every walk through the city felt like a front-row seat to European fashion.

It was the perfect place to begin a trip centered around beauty, culture, and discovery.

The Dolomites: Cycling Through One of the Most Beautiful Places on Earth

From Milan, we joined Backroads for an incredible active journey through the Italian Dolomites and Lake Garda.

As a former competitive cyclist, I’ve ridden in many beautiful places, but the Dolomites were unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Towering limestone peaks rose dramatically above emerald valleys, creating scenery so stunning it hardly seemed real.

Each day brought new adventures as we cycled through charming alpine villages, climbed winding mountain roads, and enjoyed breathtaking views around every corner. The climbs were challenging, but the rewards were extraordinary. There is something incredibly satisfying about reaching a summit under your own power and being greeted by views that leave you speechless.

The Backroads experience was exceptional, combining adventure, luxury, and camaraderie. Whether we were riding through mountain passes, enjoying local cuisine, or sharing stories with fellow travelers after a day on the bike, every moment felt special.

Lake Garda: Italy’s Lakeside Gem

From the dramatic mountains, we descended to the serene beauty of Lake Garda.

The contrast was remarkable. The rugged alpine landscape gave way to sparkling blue water, charming waterfront villages, and rolling hills dotted with vineyards and olive groves.

Cycling along the lake was one of the highlights of the trip. The scenery was spectacular, with panoramic views of the water framed by distant mountains. We stopped in picturesque towns, enjoyed authentic Italian cuisine, and embraced the slower pace that makes lake life so appealing.

Lake Garda quickly became one of my favorite stops of the trip. Mornings started with coffee overlooking the water, and every ride seemed to reveal another postcard-worthy view. It felt elegant without being crowded and offered the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation.

Venice: A City Unlike Any Other

Our next destination was Venice, a city that feels as though it exists outside of time.

Arriving in Venice is always magical. The absence of cars, the winding canals, and the centuries-old architecture create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.

We wandered through narrow alleyways, crossed historic bridges, explored charming piazzas, and discovered hidden corners throughout the city. Around every turn was another postcard-perfect view.

As evening fell, Venice became even more enchanting. The reflections dancing on the canals, the soft glow of lanterns, and the sound of gondolas gliding through the water created an unforgettable experience.

Paris & Roland-Garros: A Tennis Lover’s Dream

The final chapter of our journey brought us to Paris, one of my favorite cities in the world.

Paris always feels magical. From morning walks along elegant boulevards to afternoons spent exploring iconic landmarks and evenings enjoying incredible cuisine, every day felt like a celebration of the city’s beauty and culture.

But this visit had an extra layer of excitement because we were attending Roland-Garros, home of the French Open.

As a lifelong tennis player and fan, there is something truly special about watching the world’s best athletes compete on the iconic red clay courts. The atmosphere throughout the grounds was electric, filled with energy, anticipation, and appreciation for the game.

One of the absolute highlights of the tournament was watching Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka compete in an unforgettable match. Seeing two of the biggest stars in women’s tennis battle on one of the sport’s grandest stages was incredible. The power, athleticism, and intensity they brought to every point reminded me why I love this sport so much.

Watching them compete in person added an entirely different perspective. Their athleticism was remarkable, but what impressed me most was their mental toughness. Every point mattered, and the energy inside the stadium was unlike anything I have experienced while watching tennis on television.

Being able to witness that match in person at Roland-Garros was a bucket-list moment and one I will never forget.

Reflections on an Extraordinary Journey

An unforgettable evening in Paris.

This trip was everything I love about travel.

It combined active adventure with luxury, world-class sporting events with cultural experiences, and breathtaking natural beauty with some of Europe’s most iconic cities.

From cycling through the majestic Dolomites and along the shores of Lake Garda, to wandering the romantic canals of Venice, to cheering from the stands at Roland-Garros in Paris, every destination brought its own unique magic.

Travel has a way of broadening our perspective, reminding us how much beauty, culture, and inspiration exist beyond our everyday routines. It challenges us, inspires us, and creates memories that stay with us long after we return home.
